Uganda 2009

Life Link’s Uganda ‘09 Mission Trip is an opportunity to not only stretch you beyond your comfort zone, but to make a difference in the lives of those less fortunate than yourself. Depending upon your area of expertise, you’ll have an opportunity to be a part of a medical team, a construction team, or a children’s ministry team. The teams will minister to the residents of a rural area just outside Kampala, Uganda. The medical team will be doing vision testing, fitting for eye glasses, diabetic screening, nutrition teaching, and working hands-on with patients who are afflicted with diseases like malaria and HIV. The construction team is going to do some repairs on an elementary school, King Solomon’s Academy, which provides a free education and a hot meal daily for 650+ children. The children’s ministry team will be holding a fun multi-media VBS program for the children as well.

Will you reach beyond your own four walls and minister to those less fortunate than you? The African nation of Uganda is hungry… ...But the hunger extends far beyond the physical need for food.

HEALTHCARE

Due to an average lifespan of 43 years of age, a whopping 10% of the nation are orphans. In some areas, it is not uncommon to find households that are being run by 8-or 9-year old children because their parents have succumbed to disease. Or one 75-year-old grandparent trying to care for 12-15 children. Many people have to WALK up to 100 miles to receive any major healthcare...and then they may be turned away if they are unable to pay for the services up front. The many small clinics are very undersupplied, lacking even basic diagnostic equipment. Much of the diagnostic work is done by observation alone. That’s not good enough.

EDUCATION

There are two social classes in Uganda, the very wealthy and the very poor. Because education is not free in Uganda, many children from poverty stricken areas are unable to receive even a basic education. Many children who are able to attend school must go all day without food. Every child should have access to education. And no child should have to go hungry.
